Foundation Plus Training for Schools and Education
Two day course (total four days when combined with Foundation Training)
Foundation Plus is a two‑day extension to the Foundation course. It can be completed in two ways:
- As a four‑day block (Foundation + Foundation Plus delivered together), or
- Separately, by completing the two‑day Foundation course first and returning for the two‑day Foundation Plus when availability suits.
The Foundation Plus is a supportive, in‑depth programme for school teams working with pupils who may experience medium‑to‑high levels of distress, including those in SEND schools, specialist provisions, alternative provision and SEMH settings.
This course builds on everything covered in the two-day Foundation programme, offering a deeper exploration of trauma‑informed, person‑centred practice and safe, ethical restraint‑reduction approaches. Staff spend time understanding the wider context of restraint reduction, including the principles of the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) and the impact that culture, environment and power dynamics can have on a pupil’s experience.
What does the course cover?
- Trauma‑informed understanding of complex distress
- Advanced de‑escalation and relational support strategies
- Detailed exploration of the behaviour‑escalation model
- Supporting pupils with significant SEND, sensory or communication needs
- Understanding the risks associated with physical restraint, including positional asphyxia
- Exploring psychological restraint, power dynamics and institutional culture
- Ethical disengagement, support and safe physical‑intervention techniques
- Reflective practice to help staff feel grounded and supported
- Relevant legislation around reasonable force, safeguarding and restrictive practices
Participants complete a written assessment and practical evaluations to ensure confidence, safety and competency.
