Foundation Plus Training for Schools and Education

Two day course (total four days when combined with Foundation Training)

Foundation Plus is a two‑day extension to the Foundation course. It can be completed in two ways:

  • As a four‑day block (Foundation + Foundation Plus delivered together), or
  • Separately, by completing the two‑day Foundation course first and returning for the two‑day Foundation Plus when availability suits.

The Foundation Plus is a supportive, in‑depth programme for school teams working with pupils who may experience medium‑to‑high levels of distress, including those in SEND schools, specialist provisions, alternative provision and SEMH settings.

This course builds on everything covered in the two-day Foundation programme, offering a deeper exploration of trauma‑informed, person‑centred practice and safe, ethical restraint‑reduction approaches. Staff spend time understanding the wider context of restraint reduction, including the principles of the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) and the impact that culture, environment and power dynamics can have on a pupil’s experience.

What does the course cover?

  • Trauma‑informed understanding of complex distress
  • Advanced de‑escalation and relational support strategies
  • Detailed exploration of the behaviour‑escalation model
  • Supporting pupils with significant SEND, sensory or communication needs
  • Understanding the risks associated with physical restraint, including positional asphyxia
  • Exploring psychological restraint, power dynamics and institutional culture
  • Ethical disengagement, support and safe physical‑intervention techniques
  • Reflective practice to help staff feel grounded and supported
  • Relevant legislation around reasonable force, safeguarding and restrictive practices

Participants complete a written assessment and practical evaluations to ensure confidence, safety and competency.

Who is this level best suited to?

  • SEND schools and specialist education settings
  • Alternative provision and PRUs
  • SEMH schools
  • Schools supporting pupils with high‑intensity distress responses
  • Behaviour, safeguarding and pastoral teams
  • MATs wanting consistent, safe practice across multiple high‑need settings

This course is delivered to up to 12 participants with two trainers, allowing plenty of space for practice, reflection and discussion. An annual one‑day refresher keeps skills current, safe and aligned with Bild Act and RRN standards.

Course delivery options

Flexible, low-disruption

  • Ideal when timetables are tight and you can’t release a whole team at once.

  • You can book just one or two staff onto a scheduled session.

  • Staff learn alongside colleagues from other schools and trusts — great for sharing ideas, reassurance and real‑world experiences.

  • We organise the venue and create a calm, supportive learning environment.

  • Delivered to the same Bild Act‑certified, RRN‑aligned standards as in‑school training.

  • Helps schools build confidence and capability without disrupting the timetable.

Whole team, consistent practice

  • Best when you want everyone trained together for a shared approach.

  • Supports consistent, safe practice across the school or trust.

  • Allows training to be exclusivley tailored to your setting, pupils and context.

  • Helps embed culture change and whole‑team confidence more quickly.
