Two-day course for older adult and dementia care

A course for teams and individuals working with people who may experience low to medium levels of distress, including those in residential care, supported living, day services and dementia care and those in receipt of domiciliary care in their own homes.

This two‑day course helps staff understand and respond to behaviours of concern. Staff explore person‑centred, trauma‑informed practice and learn how to support individuals in ways that protect dignity, reduce distress and strengthen relationships.

What the course covers

  • Trauma‑informed understanding of distress and unmet needs
  • Early, relational de‑escalation strategies
  • Identifying the stages of behaviour escalation and responding safely at each point
  • Supporting people with sensory needs, communication differences, cognitive impairment or acquired brain injuries
  • Understanding the risks and limitations of restrictive practices and the use of reasonable force
  • Relevant legislation and safeguarding expectations
  • Ethical physical‑release techniques and safe‑stance/escort skills
  • Reflective practice to help staff feel confident and more supported

Participants complete a short multiple‑choice assessment and practical demonstrations of physical‑release techniques to ensure confidence and safety.

Best suited for:

  • Residential care
  • Supported living
  • Day services
  • Dementia care
  • Community support teams e.g. domiciliary care
  • Staff supporting individuals who may experience heightened distress

An annual one‑day refresher keeps skills aligned with Bild ACT and RRN standards.
